Waterloo Secondary School Student Excels at NASA Space University Camp 2026

Jayvaughn Bigford, a student of Waterloo Secondary School, has returned from an extraordinary educational experience after participating in the prestigious NASA Space University Camp 2026, held at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, from June 21–27, 2026.

The opportunity was made possible through the long-standing partnership between Hillview College and El Dorado West Secondary School, which has facilitated participation in the NASA Space University Camp for students over the past decade. Jayvaughn was invited to participate as a guest of Hillview College. The intensive week-long programme brought together students from around the world, offering immersive experiences in aerospace engineering, space exploration, leadership, and international collaboration.

Exploring NASA’s Legacy of Innovation

Throughout the camp, participants enjoyed exclusive behind-the-scenes access to some of NASA’s most significant facilities and exhibits, gaining firsthand insight into the technologies and innovations that have shaped human space exploration.

Highlights of the technical tours included:

  • The historic Apollo 11 Mission Control Center, where students examined the operations that supported one of humanity’s greatest achievements.
  • NASA’s Habitat Research Center, where they explored the engineering challenges associated with sustaining human life during long-duration space missions.
  • Advanced rocket and propulsion exhibits, showcasing the evolution of launch vehicle technology and modern aerospace engineering.

One of the week’s most memorable experiences was a private briefing with a veteran NASA astronaut who shared lessons from three missions aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and participation in a 300-day simulated habitat mission. The session emphasized leadership, resilience, teamwork, and decision-making under pressure.

International Teamwork Leads to Success

At the heart of the programme were five demanding engineering and design competitions that required students to work collaboratively in international teams.

Competing as a member of Team Escapade, alongside teammates from different countries, the group demonstrated exceptional teamwork, innovation, and technical ability to earn 3rd Place Overall among nine international teams.

The team’s standout achievements included:

  • 1st Place – Rocket Build and Design, successfully designing and constructing a launch vehicle that achieved stable flight and safe parachute recovery through effective aerodynamic and structural design.
  • 2nd Place – Thermal Shielding (Cryo/Thermal), developing a thermal protection system capable of withstanding direct exposure to an intense $2,500 blowtorch, demonstrating strong understanding of materials science and heat-transfer principles.

Developing Future STEM Leaders

Beyond the competitions, the NASA Space University Camp challenged participants to think critically, solve complex engineering problems, and collaborate across cultures while working under demanding timelines.

The experience strengthened essential skills in:
